Homemade Rasam Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 6 tbsp masoor dal (orange dal)

  • 1 tomato chopped finely

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder

  • 3 tbsp rasam powder ( MTR brand)

  • 1 tbsp amchur ( mango )powder or a small tamarind ball

  • 1 tsp mustard seeds

  • 1/4 tsp asefodita

  • 1 whole red chilli

  • salt as per taste

  • 4 tbsp fresh grated coconut

  • some chopped curry leaves

  • some chopped coriander leaves

Method:

  1. Clean, wash and soak the dal in a vessel with 5 cups water for about 30 minutes.

  2. Add the turmeric, amchur powder, salt, chopped tomato, half the quantity of curry leaves and coriander leaves.

  3. Cook the dal for about 5-10 minutes . Then add the rasam powder and with a hand rai mix well so that the cooked dal is properly mashed. Cook the dal again on low flame for about 15 minutes.

  4. Remove from flame.

  5. In a small pan heat 1 tsp ghee/oil add the mustard seeds when it splutters add the asefodita, curry leaves and whole chilli. Pour it on the rasam.

  6. Remove in a serving bowl and garnish with remaining chopped coriander leaves and grated coconut.

Serve this yummy rasam hot with lemon rice.

Note: Alternatively rasam can also be made without dal. All steps remain the same.
